Last Thursday we had a guest speaker come in to our PED 315 class.
A head coach for womens basketball, along with as being an assistant athletic director keeps Vic Mithcell busy all year long at Shorter University. He has been there for 21 years, seeing the equivalent of a team added each year he has been there with Shorter growing to a 21 team program.
Success has come through for Coach Mitchell through hard work and determination. He started his coaching career as a volunteer at the University of Georgia after graduation (class of '82). Later falling into a full time manager job, along with a graduate assistant position for the men's basketball team. Was along for the ride as UGA went to the first and only Georgia team to go to the Final Four in the spring of '83.
His first head coaching poistion was at Reinhardt in '84 for the men's inagural competitive season. later had to choose between mens or womens and chose womens. Led him to get to Shorter.
Coach Mitchell is being part of an exciting time for Shorter with there transition into the NCAA DII arena.
Having been to a Final Four, Coach Mitchell's experience is quite amazing. He passed on the knowledge that networking can take you places, and working hard for success is key.
